PORTLAND, OR Tuesday, June 19, 2007 – On June 1, 2007, Macmillan Publishing Solutions (MPS) announced the launch of its new MPS Mobile service at Book Expo America. This service allows Internet-enabled mobile phone and PDA device users to download books, articles, chapters, directories, newspapers, and other print content onto their cell phones and devices easily and inexpensively. MPS Mobile offers a technological solution that enables on-the-fly conversion of text files to any WAP-enabled (Wireless Access Protocol) mobile device on the market by reflowing content to frame to that mobile device’s screen and format. MPS Mobile is also a distribution platform that allows publishers to immediately make available these mobile products to users on more than 75 phone systems, including all major American carriers as well as over 150 countries globally. The MPS Mobile platform allows users to buy mobile content products via PayPal, credit cards, or, in many cases, a charge to their mobile phone bill. It will also allow publishers to make free promotional material available to users, including content that can then forward users to Internet retail sites, or give incentives to users to buy further downloads. Content can be easily accessed through the MPS Mobile WAPsite via a simple browser search for macmobile.wap.com or by text messaging MACMOBILE 23163 which will return to the user a direct link to the Mobile WAPsite. Publishers can also have their own special location codes, such as oreilly.wap.com (O'Reilly Media is a participating publisher in the MPS Mobile launch), as well as their own text triggers (such as Oreilly 23163), which will also take the user directly to the publishers' repository of titles on the MPS Mobile WAPsite. The MPS Mobile service will give publishers potential access to any mobile Internet user, a current market of over 2.5 billion users worldwide, which is expected to grow to 4 billion by 2010. MPS Mobile takes away all the problems of getting content on mobile by allowing publishers to supply simple text, XML files, or a direct link to their digital content repositories. These repositories can then be converted by the MPS Mobile service to appear on any cell phone or mobile device screen anywhere, anytime. Publishers can quickly monetize their products in the rapidly growing cell phone and hand-held device content market with relatively little downside risk, reaping much potential upside reward. The MPS Mobile content cannot be pirated, copied, or shared, and it allows content providers a risk-free method of making their content available to online users. As part of the Holtzbrinck group of companies, MPS Mobile sees itself as a global provider of content to the world's consumers. Initial offerings from the MPS Mobile WAPsite will include works in Spanish, English, Japanese, and French. In many places in the world, mobile is the Internet. MPS Mobile wants to reach all of those users currently left out by digital content not readily accessible currently via cell phone or other mobile devices. Portability and convenience are the hallmarks of the mobile user experience. As a result we've made the MPS Mobile service portable, convenient, and easy to use. On hand for the press reception were be Bob Kasher and Rose Rummel-Eury, the developers and originators of the MPS Mobile concept and service and noted writer Adeena Karasick, the world's first mobile poet, who spoke to the creative possibilities mobile opens to writers. Others on hand included: C.J. Rayhill, CIO of O'Reilly Media; Allen Noren, Director of Online Marketing and Digital Initiatives for O'Reilly Media; John Lustig of Last Kiss Comics; and Ravi Singh, President and CEO of MPS Technologies. MPS Mobile partner companies in this enterprise include Fli Digital, eMacmillan, MPS Technologies, Bango.com, O'Reilly Media, and Mark Logic, among many others. The launch for this service was announced at Book Expo America on June 1, 2007 at the MPS Technologies booth #4333 at the Javits Center in New York, NY. |
