FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VitalSource Names ICC Macmillan Newest VitalBook Creator

ICC Macmillan Works with Publishers to Convert Books to Digital Format

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 23, 2005—VitalSource Technologies, Inc. and Interactive Composition Corporation (now ICC Macmillan) are now making it simple for book publishers to create and distribute the highest quality digital and downloadable content.
For more than a decade, VitalSource has worked with education publishers to create and distribute digital content. Now, VitalSource is enabling companies that specialize in book making and file conversion, such as ICC Macmillan, to offer the service directly to their publisher clients. ICC Macmillan will be one of the first companies certified by VitalSource to offer VitalBook™ digital versions of materials to publishers. By working directly with ICC Macmillan, publishers can get VitalBook versions of their books faster and for less expense than in the past. In most cases, the export of VitalBook files can now be an automatic byproduct of standard conversion or typesetting work.

“We are pleased to have ICC Macmillan as a partner helping publishers take advantage of new business in the world of digital content,” said Frank Daniels III, VitalSource president and CEO. “Their expertise in XML file creation and conversion, coupled with their experience in the broader world of publisher services, makes them an ideal partner. They are helping their publishing clients find new opportunities to make money in digital publishing.”

VitalBooks are rights-protected digital files downloaded to the computer desktop, much like MP3 music files. They are portable and allow the user to make and share notes and highlights. All VitalBooks also include bibliography support and multi-document search capabilities.

“In the past, the difficulty for publishers has been getting their files converted into the VitalBook format in order to get started,” Daniels said. “With ICC Macmillan, publishers can now get VitalBook versions of their documents directly from the folks who are already doing their file set up work. If you are a publisher who is ready to explore digital business opportunities, ICC Macmillan just made it a whole lot easier.”

Effective immediately, ICC Macmillan will be able to convert any source file directly into the VitalBook format. Publishers already depend on ICC Macmillan to convert files from XML to typesetting, and now they can request that ICC Macmillan digitize content too.

“We are excited to begin offering VitalBook as a standard file-output option to our customers,” said Scott Johnson, President of ICC Macmillan. “The VitalBook format has proven itself commercially. This partnership will allow our publishers to convert to digital content quickly.”
